Navassa Island
Sea turtles, such as the one rescued at left, are unfortunately hunted by visiting fishermen for food. The population of sea turtles in the Caribbean has declined from one million several decades ago to about 50,000 today. Regional conservation efforts stress the value of marine animals to tourism but the part of Haiti closest to Navassa has not benefited from economic alternatives to fishing and hunting.
